“Change is daunting, but we must move away from our dependence on fossil fuels and embrace a sustainable future,” said Kathleen Rogers, President of EARTHDAY.ORG. Image Credit: Javier Miranda/Unsplash.

Earth Day is recognized as the planet’s largest civic event each year. It is celebrated each year on April 22nd and serves as a powerful reminder of our collective responsibility to address environmental issues.

This global event calls upon individuals, communities, and governments to take bold actions to safeguard the health of our planet. Together, we have the capability and duty to preserve and protect Earth’s precious natural resources.

History of Earth Day

The founders of EARTHDAY.ORG created and organized the very first Earth Day on April 22, 1970. Since then, EARTHDAY.ORG has mobilized over 1 billion people each year on Earth Day and throughout the year to help protect the planet.

The visionary behind Earth Day was US Senator Gaylord A. Nelson, who sought to raise awareness about environmental issues. The first Earth Day coordination was skillfully handled by Denis A. Hayes, whose efforts helped mobilize millions in support of a healthier planet.

Denis Hayes, Organizer of the Very First Earth Day, and Board Chair Emeritus of EARTHDAY.ORG, stated: “For years we have been fed the lie that only fossil fuels can power the planet, that is not true. By the 2030s, the largest source of electricity generation on the planet will be solar power.”

The name “Earth Day” was creatively coined by Julian N. Koenig, who played a significant role in promoting the event and its mission of environmental stewardship. Together, these individuals laid the foundation for an annual celebration that emphasizes the importance of protecting our environment.

Earth Day 1970 marked a significant milestone in environmental protection, leading to the passage of key legislation in the United States, such as the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act. Additionally, it prompted the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Following this, many other countries adopted similar laws. In 1990, Denis Hayes, the visionary who first coordinated the national event in 1970 in the USA, propelled it onto the global stage, orchestrating remarkable celebrations in 141 countries around the world. In 2016, the United Nations designated Earth Day as the day to officially sign the Paris Climate Agreement into force.

Earth Day 2025 Theme

“We hear a lot about saving lives, especially babies, but if we are going to truly champion human life, we have to talk about access to affordable, clean energy,” said Kathleen Rogers, President of EARTHDAY.ORG

Tuesday, April 22, 2025, marks the 55th anniversary of Earth Day. This year’s theme is: “ OUR POWER, OUR PLANET ”, which focuses on supporting the goal of tripling renewable energy by 2030 for a sustainable future. This initiative champions energy generated from solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, and tidal sources.

This year’s theme centers on three main pillars: power, people, and planet.

  • We must strive for equity, and embracing a transition to renewable energy will lift underprivileged communities across the globe by granting them access to reliable electricity. This transformation has the potential to empower lives and foster sustainable development for those who need it most.
  • Our planet urgently needs us to adopt renewable energy, as a rapid transition to renewables is essential for combating climate change. Renewable sources produce electricity without emitting carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas (GHG), whereas fossil fuels greatly contribute to global warming.

Earth Day Themes

Previous Earth Day themes include:

  • 2024: “Planet vs. Plastics”

  • 2021: “Restore Our Earth”
  • 2018: “End Plastic Pollution”

A call to action

Given the wide range of environmental issues, an individual interested in contributing to improving the environment faces a distressing dilemma—in which of the many environmental issues should one participate?

The advice to individuals who ask this question is to choose one of the problems that has the most personal meaning and then to participate directly in solutions. Nowadays, there are many local organizations or local chapters of national/international organizations that are concerned with a variety of environmental issues/problems. People looking for a way to help can seek the organization that takes the philosophical approach most consistent with their own and that focuses on the issues that have the most meaning to them.

In honor of Earth Day, let us all take the “Earth Pledge”: “I pledge to do my best to help make the Earth a safe and welcoming home for both present and future generations.”
