California-based maker of a real-world data platform, Atropos Health has added Nodal Patient Deidentification and Query Time Interval Encoding (Nodal Deid) across the GENEVA OS platform for members of the Atropos Evidence Network.

The company noted that it will enable its members to “fill data gaps in patients’ longitudinal records from participating Atropos Evidence Network sources to leverage robust deidentified patient records mapped to the HIPAA safe harbor standard while allowing members to maintain control over and safeguard their data”.

Atropos’ CEO and Co-Founder Dr Brigham Hyde in an interview with the Drug and Device World highlights that “the company’s technology enables frictionless federated multi-nodal queries, safe harbor encoding, and cross-node queries without requiring data transfer. Simply less need to make copies of copies of data and move them around to follow patients between data sources.”

Adding: “This proprietary technology will remove barriers to healthcare data access, allowing life sciences companies to make discoveries faster and more efficiently – leading to better treatments and patient outcomes.”

A game changer for the life sciences and healthcare sector

He lists out the various use cases for the technology:

  • This innovation is a game-changer in how healthcare and life sciences companies’ access and use real-world data with greater accuracy while also making it faster and more secure than traditional methods. Here’s why:
  1. Nodal Deidentification allows life sciences companies, hospitals, and data platforms to securely link and query data without moving or exposing patient records. This is a major breakthrough in data privacy and security.
  2. The ability to run multi-source queries in real-time across the Atropos Evidence Network has huge implications for clinical research, drug development, and healthcare innovation use cases and federated nodal queries under Deid are not just the future, they are here now.
  3. Including death linkages allows for better patient outcome tracking and more precise research conclusions.
  • Federated Nodal Deidentification allows clinicians and researchers to get a more complete view of patient health history with every query through deidentified longitudinal records, including death information and is backed by transparency and audibility already associated with Atropos Health.
  • Data users gain speed and data holders maintain control. Studies can be done much faster than traditional models because data doesn’t need to be moved and combined.
  • Data holders benefit from secure configuration. GENEVA OS installs behind a customer’s firewall and sensitive patient data stays where it is. Data holders also benefit from a passive revenue stream.

Data security at the forefront

Dr Hyde notes, “Nodal Deidentification enriches the Atropos Evidence Network, allowing members to leverage longitudinal patient data from participating Atropos Evidence Network sources, ensuring the most robust deidentified patient records while maintaining data possession and security.”

“Because Nodal Deidentification securely links patient records across different data sources at query time, ChatRWD and Green Button can now generate answers to questions that require a more comprehensive patient record,” says Dr Hyde. “Since it integrates multiple sources without exposing private data, clinicians and researchers can ask questions of a broader, more comprehensive view of patient records. For data holders, Nodal Deidentification allows them to, fill in gaps that might exist in their dataset.”

“Nodal Deidentification enhances the completeness of patient records allowing ChatRWD to generate answers based on more comprehensive patient records, making it more useful for research, analysis, and clinical decision-making,” says Dr Hyde.
